The Maine Coon’s coat is long, silky and water-resistant, with a shorter layer on the shoulders and a longer ruff, britches and tail. Despite its length, it is generally less prone to matting than many long-haired breeds, and a regular routine keeps it in beautiful condition.
How often to groom
For most Maine Coons, a thorough comb-through once or twice a week is enough, with extra attention during seasonal shedding. Pay particular attention to the areas behind the ears, under the arms and around the britches, where tangles are most likely to form.
Start young
Short, gentle grooming sessions from kittenhood help grooming become a pleasant, bonding routine. Keep sessions brief, offer praise or a treat, and stop before your kitten becomes restless.
Beyond the coat
A complete routine also includes regular nail trims, checking ears and eyes, and dental care as recommended by your veterinarian.
