The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Size varies considerably between individual cats and bloodlines, so the figures below are general guidance rather than a promise for any one kitten.
Typical adult size
Adult males commonly weigh somewhere around 13 to 18 pounds, and females around 8 to 12 pounds, with some cats falling outside these ranges. Much of their impressive appearance also comes from a long body, a substantial frame and a thick, shaggy coat.
A slow-maturing breed
Maine Coons grow slowly. Many continue to fill out until they are three to five years old, so a young adult may still have a lot of growing to do.
Planning for a large cat
Choose sturdy, tall scratching posts and cat trees, generously sized litter boxes and carriers suited to a big cat. Your veterinarian is the best guide to your own cat’s healthy weight as they grow.
